Happy Birthday, Daddy

59 years ago today
You arrived in this world.
34 years and 10 days ago
You said yes to your “girl”.

In 20 days it will be
A year since you left
All of these events
Leave me bereft

I would normally celebrate
By making a call to you
I would sing Happy Birthday
And act goofy, too.

But today I can’t do that
For you are not here
You left this earth
And I shed a tear.

I miss your laugh, Daddy
I miss your crooked smile.
I miss getting to see you
And talking a while.

Today so many people
Who loved you so much
Can’t accept the fact
That you they can’t touch

You left behind family
You left behind friends
You’re waiting in Heaven
For us to see you again.

So I’ll sing Happy Birthday
To you in my head
I will celebrate your life
Even though you are dead.
