Questions from a Little Boy

When you died did it hurt?
Where did you die,
If not at home or at work?
If your lungs were sick
Is it because you smoked?
If your bones were hurting
What made them be broke?
If you went to Heaven
How can you be in the ground?
If you are in my heart
Why don’t you make a sound?
I saw the black sign
With your name written on it
Why does Mommy cry
When she happens upon it?
If you were not old
Why did God take you away?
Didn’t He know
There were more games to play?
I have heard my Nana cry
Don’t you know that she misses you?
I don’t understand
But I am trying to!
I am seven now
I was only 4 when you left
3 years have passed
So much that you’ve missed
One day I will know more
About the day that you left
But for now I remain
A little boy bereft.
